Home Wall Through a Customer's Eyes

Andreas Burger from the German climbing website KletterPuls bought our adjustable Home Wall in the wall-mounted version. He built it, climbed on it properly and wrote a review. With the author's permission, we are sharing an English translation.
The text is Andreas's. Our additions are always in a box like this one.
The Lama Holds Home Wall is a modular, angle-adjustable bouldering and training wall for private indoor use. The wall-mounted version shown here is fixed directly to a load-bearing wall, so it needs considerably less extra floor space than the freestanding version.
What makes it special: the wall angle is not fixed. A manual hand winch adjusts the entire climbing surface. Combined with the 20 cm kicker, the wall can be set anywhere between 10° and 45° overhang. The same wall can therefore be used for technical and endurance-focused training as well as for steep, power-oriented boulders.
Besides the manual winch, we now also offer an electric one. New versions of the Home Wall tilt up to 55°.

LAMA now offers the Home Wall in a total of ten sizes, from 180 × 240 cm to 360 × 360 cm, with a 0, 20 or 40 cm kicker. For the compact version shown here, the 240 × 240 cm main surface is the most relevant.
Every size is available with a manual or electric winch. You will find all variants on the Home Wall product page.
Mini MoonBoard compatible hole grid
A major advantage of this version is the MoonBoard hole grid. Besides its own grid, LAMA also offers prepared grids for the MoonBoard, Kilter Board and Tension Board (all with LED holes where needed). The MoonBoard layout uses M10 T-nuts, with additional holes for positioning the LEDs.
The dimensions of the 240 × 240 cm main surface match a Mini MoonBoard setup. The official MoonBoard grid works with 20 cm spacing, which on the LAMA Home Wall means there is enough room for additional holds in the 10 × 10 cm offset grid.
This means the Home Wall can not only be set freely as a classic spray wall, but can also be used as a standardised training board with a matching Mini MoonBoard hold set and LED system (now even with the corresponding holes).

You can set the Home Wall to 40°, so the main difference from the original is the kicker height.
Angle adjustment with a hand winch
The tilt mechanism is mechanical. Using the side-mounted hand winch, the climbing surface is raised or lowered in a controlled way. Newer versions offer an electric winch as an option. The winch is not the only thing securing the wall.
LAMA uses a 3-point safety system made up of:
- a winch for controlled angle adjustment,
- safety straps with quick tensioners on both sides, and
- mechanical locking struts that fix the wall at the chosen angle and stop it from swaying.
Once set, the wall is mechanically supported and not just held by the winch cable. Thanks to its design, the hand winch can be mounted on the left or right.

Wall-mounted: a compact setup
In the wall-mounted version, the load-bearing frame is anchored directly to a solid brick or concrete wall. LAMA provides either suitable anchors and screws or bonded threaded rods for this. A plain drywall partition is not suitable for this version. Self-supporting freestanding versions are available as an alternative.
An important advantage over the freestanding construction is the small amount of extra space it needs. For a 240 cm wide wall, LAMA gives an overall width of about 263 cm for the wall-mounted construction. Add about 15 cm for operating the hand winch.
This is especially interesting for a basement, garage or small training room: the construction gives you a fully adjustable training wall without needing a large freestanding frame.

A modular Home Wall system
The Home Wall is not made of a few huge parts but has a modular design. The longest single structural part is 120 cm, and the entire delivery for our wall arrived on a single Euro pallet. This makes the components relatively easy to transport, even into basements or training rooms that can only be reached through narrow access points.
The wall comes with pre-drilled panels, pre-installed T-nuts, connecting hardware, the winch, the strap safety system and bracing struts. The wall-mounted version also includes the matching hardware for fixing it to the wall.
If you are handy, assembly is done fairly quickly (4 hours in our case), but it can normally take longer, especially when building alone and with the newer, larger walls.
What makes the Home Wall interesting as a training wall
For us, the decisive difference from a fixed home wall lies less in the MoonBoard grid than in the adjustability. At 10 to 15° you can train fairly moderately and technically on larger holds. Around 25 to 30° the wall becomes noticeably more athletic and suits power endurance boulders. At 40 to 45° it turns into a steep training wall for finger strength, body tension and short, intense boulders.
Depending on how it is set, the wall can combine several training concepts in one structure: spray wall, individually set training boulders and Mini MoonBoard-style system training.
