How to take care of wooden holds
How to Care for Wooden Climbing Holds
Using wooden holds comes with certain specifics. One of them is caring for them.
With plastic holds, it's pretty straightforward – just leave them to soak in a bucket, clean them with a brush or cloth, and you're done.
Wooden holds require more gentle care, but on the other hand, a well-maintained wooden hold can serve you longer than a plastic one and even after several years can look still like new. Unlike a plastic hold, which loses its grip over time, a wooden hold maintains its properties even after repeated sanding. Wood is simply wood :) If you're interested in all the advantages of wooden holds, check out the article Why are wooden holds better than polyurethane.
How to maintain wooden holds
- 1) Remove the hold from the wall, check if it's not cracked or damaged.
- 2) Thoroughly wipe it with a damp cloth and let it dry immediately at room temperature.
- 3) Sand away ingrained dirt or black smudges from climbing shoes with fine sandpaper (we recommend grit 120).
- Voilà – you're holding a hold that looks (almost) like new.
- Check if all washers are holding in the screw holes, and if necessary, reattach them with super glue. And get the hold back on your home climbing wall right away.
What not to do
⚠️ Never expose holds to long-term moisture or dry them in direct sunlight – they could crack.
